Scientific Credentials
Dr. Robert Elston is Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Director of Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology at Case Western Reserve University and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Wellcome Trust Center for Human Genetics, Oxford University.

Dr. Elston is the current leading figure in Genetic Epidemiology and has been instrumental in the development of many of the modern techniques used in the statistical analysis of family data. From 1968-1983 he directed a linkage laboratory funded by the U.S. National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Since 1986 he has developed a major computer package for Statistical Analysis for Genetic Epidemiology (S.A.G.E.), funded by the U.S. National Center for Research Resources and in use by hundreds of researchers in the U.S. and internationally.

Dr. Elston's work has been recognized by a number of international awards. These include the Hoch Award from the American Psychopathological Association, the Wick R. Williams Memorial Award from the Fox Chase Cancer Center and the William Allan Award from the American Society of Human Genetics. He has also served as President of the International Genetic Epidemiology Society.

Dr. Elston is the Principal Investigator of numerous research grants, and has authored over 400 publications in Genetics and Statistics. He serves on a number of National Committees, including the National Cancer Institute's Steering Committee for the Cancer Genetics Network and the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases' Steering Committee for the Family Investigation of Nephropathy and Diabetes. He is often a member of NIH's site visit teams and Ad Hoc Study Section member. He also serves on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Human Genetics, Statistics in Medicine, and the Indian Journal of Human Genetics.

Former positions include Head of the Department of Biometry and Genetics, and Director of the Center for Molecular and Human Genetics, at the Louisiana State University Medical Center. Dr. Elston has extensive consulting experience in private industry, and has advised numerous companies, including Celera, Applied Biosciences, Sequana Therapeutics and AxyS Pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Elston was a Coulthurst Scholar at Magdalene College, Cambridge University, and received his PhD from Cornell University.
