Dr. Isaac (Zak) Kohane is a pediatric endocrinologist and bioinformatics specialist with extensive experience in methodological development in medical informatics and genomics. He has over 40 publications and has been very successful in attaining research grant support from the NIH and other granting bodies in the United States. Dr. Kohane leads several large-scale bioinformatics and genomics projects, and has extensive experience with cutting edge technologies such as microarrays. He has recently been appointed Director of Bioinformatics for an NIH Genome Resource Center for Heart, Lung and Blood Disease at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Dr. Kohane undertook undergraduate training at Brown University, and completed the MD/PhD program at Boston University in 1987. His doctoral work was undertaken in the Clinical Decision Making Group at the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science. He is currently the director of the Children's Hospital Informatics Program and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kohane' research builds on his doctoral work in computer science on decision support and subsequent research in machine learning applied to biomedicine. Dr. Kohane was also chief architect of the World Wide Web Electronic Medical Record System (W3-EMRS) which has been the foundation of several multi-institutional implementations and collaborations. He has also led the development of cryptographic health identification systems and automated personal health records. Dr. Kohane has chaired several national meetings including the two most recent Spring Symposia on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine at Stanford University, sponsored by the American Association for Artificial Intelligence. He is also a founder of the Center for Outcomes and Policy Research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Kohane has extensive experience consulting to private industry, and is a practicing pediatric endocrinologist at Children's Hospital in Boston. He was a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program in 1977 and was elected to the American College of Medical Informatics in 1997 and to the Society of Pediatric Research in 1998.
Position in Triaj
Dr. Kohane, co-founder, is the Vice President of Bioinformatics at Triaj. During the initial phases of Triaj's development he will provide consulting services in the area of bioinformatics. He will be responsible for the recruitment and eventual oversight of consultants whose research focus is in bioinformatics.
